The Evolution of Fashion Runways: Where Art Meets Architecture

In recent years, fashion runways have transcended their traditional roles, evolving into grand exhibitions that blend art, architecture, and fashion design. This transformation is fueled by technological advancements and innovative design opportunities, making these events more akin to art installations than mere fashion shows. In this blog post, we explore some of the most celebrated fashion runways from recent years, showcasing the creative genius behind some of the world's leading fashion brands.

PRADA SS 2020 Womenswear Show – AMO/OMA

The collaboration between OMA’s research studio AMO and the iconic Italian brand Prada has consistently pushed the boundaries of runway design. During Milan’s Fashion Week, AMO crafted a vibrant geometric runway for Prada's Spring Summer Womenswear collection. The runway, adorned with ceramic tiles and gold-leafed columns, transformed the hall of Prada’s foundation into a mesmerizing art piece, complete with a stepped platform that offered a panoramic view of the installation.

PRADA SS 2020 Menswear Show – AMO/OMA

For the Menswear Collection, AMO reimagined Shanghai’s Silo Hall, turning the industrial space into a spectacle of bright blue lights. The linear runway intersected the building’s monumental space, with guests seated in an amphitheater that mirrored the silo’s architecture. This design highlighted the building's industrial character with a striking display of fluorescent neon lights.

Marcello Burlon SS 2020 Runway – Edoardo Tresoldi

In a stunning collaboration, Marcello Burlon teamed up with Italian artist Edoardo Tresoldi for Milan Fashion Week. Tresoldi’s wire mesh art installation deconstructed the historic Pallazo Delle Scintille, creating an ethereal backdrop for Burlon’s streetwear collection. This transformation of the 43,055 square foot, 100-foot-tall hall was a testament to the fusion of art and fashion.

FENDI SS 2021 – Bureau Betak

Fendi’s Spring Summer 2021 show, streamed live from Paris’s Brongniart Palace, was a romantic and mystical affair. Bureau Betak, a special events company, crafted a glass labyrinth adorned with wildflowers and small trees, creating a dreamy atmosphere that captivated audiences worldwide.

PRADA FW 2021 – Rem Koolhaas, OMA

The Fall Winter 2021 Menswear Collection for Prada, designed by Rem Koolhaas and AMO, was a sensory journey through four interconnected geometric rooms. Each room, distinct in shape and material, offered a unique tactile experience, fostering a deeper connection with the surroundings.

These fashion runways exemplify the seamless integration of art, architecture, and fashion, setting new standards for creativity and innovation in the industry. As we continue to witness this evolution, the possibilities for future runway designs are boundless.
